Just fold the excess paper over the coffee and press down firmly. I suppose the reason that a tight seal isn't necessary is that the BUNN machine doesn't build up high pressure as do the others. I make large pods ( a full scoop) each time without mishap. Now I can make a full 12 oz mug in one shot. I'm glad I bought the BUNN!
