The project live.linuX-gamers.net was founded with the idea to present Linux games at the Linuxtag exhibition in a novel way. A collection of games should be shown to directly run from DVD without the user in need to know about Linux or care about his system. After some intense brainstorming sessions the team decided to create and publish this DVD as a live distribution project. Thus an additional and very difficult problem had to be solved: The dvd should run on every x86 PC out there. Filed under: Computers and Cool Comments: None |

Cats will always remain mysterious animals–but exactly where they came from is no longer a riddle. A genetic study has shown that the ancestors of all of today’s domestic cats prowled the Near East. The work bolsters the notion that cats became useful to humans when agriculture started–which scientists believe happened in the Near East–forcing people to protect grain stores from rodents. David Pouge, New York Times technology writer, gives a brief overview of the pros and cons of the upcoming uber phone from Apple. This a quick run down of what he said: Pros: Interface is slick, it’s an iPod, screen is great, feature integration is fantastic, WiFi, Apple logo Cons: No memory slot, can’t replace the battery yourself, service through AT&T only, EDGE data speeds suck. Wow. This is just an amazing display of elite Theremin skills. What is a Theremin? It’s an instrument that is played by disrupting an electric field with your bodies natural capacitance. The disruption produced odd and ethereal tones. Quite amazing. I hope he builds some more computer parts out of wood. … a few months ago, I had an idea as to how the divide by two mechanisms from my first marble machine could be cascaded together to actually function as a sort of adder or counter. Once I had that idea, I knew I had to try it at some point, and recently, I finally got around to building my marble binary adding machine. Uncooperative weather at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., forced flight controllers to pass on STS-117’s first landing attempt today. The crew and the Mission Control team have turned their attention to the next orbit, which has opportunities available in Florida and at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. Astounding! This is a solid-state Tesla coil. The primary runs at its resonant frequency in the 41 KHz range, and is modulated from the control unit in order to generate the tones you hear.
So just to explain a little further, yes, it is the actual high voltage sparks that are making the noise. Every cycle of the music is a burst of sparks at 41 KHz, triggered by digital circuitry at the end of a "long" piece of fiber optics. I personally think that this should be standard fare in a marching band. Just think of it for a second, it’s perfect. Loud enough to be heard over the roar of the crowd, easy to play (keyboard interface?), and it includes it’s own light show! Sure, it might take twenty people to haul the batteries around behind it but that is a small price to pay for something as spectacular as this. Think of a smoke alarm…but more general. The photoset of the build is quite detailed and lends itself to being easily reproducible, it would be a fun project for a long weekend. [via brass goggles] Filed under: Artistic and DIY and Design Comments: None |

I have always wanted a camcorder for myself and not just any camcorder. I wanted one a bit like a professional broadcast camcorder, where I would be able to mount ad-ons like pre-amps, lights and all the other ever so cool stuff you’ll see professionals packing. However I’m not about to pay the horiffic price of a Red Camera . So let’s just build one… [via MAKE] Filed under: DIY and Mad Science Comments: None |

Well the elusive iPhone has been captured, dissected and photographed and is now ready to be stuffed and mounted. Somewhere in the night time sky a star has gone out.
I have been trying this out and I can genuinely say that I’m impressed.
I found some great driving tips, handy things like never let your arms cross over the wheel. Why? Because if there was an accident and your hands were in the way of the air bag you might break your own jaw. I never thought about that, bet you didn’t either. It has some other tips like how to back your car up in a safer fashion. It won’t teach you how to do a bootlegger turn or how to do a rolling roadblock but it might help save your life.
Looks like fun and it’s just made of paper.
Very good to see the crew made it back safe and sound.
The space shuttle Atlantis may have to stay on orbit a while longer until the weather decides to clear up.
Very nice execution of this project.
This is one of those projects that makes me want to call in sick and dive into my boxes of junk and build something!
