Live Linux Game DVD Distro!
Posted on 06.29.07 by John @ 4:17 pm

I have been trying this out and I can genuinely say that I’m impressed.

The project live.linuX-gamers.net was founded with the idea to present Linux games at the Linuxtag exhibition in a novel way. A collection of games should be shown to directly run from DVD without the user in need to know about Linux or care about his system. After some intense brainstorming sessions the team decided to create and publish this DVD as a live distribution project. Thus an additional and very difficult problem had to be solved: The dvd should run on every x86 PC out there.

The Domestication of Cats
Posted on 06.29.07 by John @ 4:11 pm

Serious Cat I think this sums up who man’s best friend actually is.

Cats will always remain mysterious animals–but exactly where they came from is no longer a riddle. A genetic study has shown that the ancestors of all of today’s domestic cats prowled the Near East. The work bolsters the notion that cats became useful to humans when agriculture started–which scientists believe happened in the Near East–forcing people to protect grain stores from rodents.

Live Longer, Drive Like a Cop
Posted on 06.29.07 by John @ 2:46 pm

I found some great driving tips, handy things like never let your arms cross over the wheel. Why? Because if there was an accident and your hands were in the way of the air bag you might break your own jaw. I never thought about that, bet you didn’t either. It has some other tips like how to back your car up in a safer fashion. It won’t teach you how to do a bootlegger turn or how to do a rolling roadblock but it might help save your life.

Pouge on iPhone
Posted on 06.27.07 by John @ 6:24 am

David Pouge, New York Times technology writer, gives a brief overview of the pros and cons of the upcoming uber phone from Apple.
This a quick run down of what he said:
Pros: Interface is slick, it’s an iPod, screen is great, feature integration is fantastic, WiFi, Apple logo
Cons: No memory slot, can’t replace the battery yourself, service through AT&T only, EDGE data speeds suck.

Paper catapult gameLooks like fun and it’s just made of paper.

Here’s a SAFE way to destroy vampires… use a catapult to toss bundles
of stakes at them from a distance! This game includes a functional catapult
(with a range of up to 10 feet), a dozen bundles of stakes and a vampire’s
grave to use as a target. The grave includes a coffin, stone vault and gravel
pit. Build your own medieval war machine and let the impaling begin!

Wow. This is just an amazing display of elite Theremin skills.
What is a Theremin? It’s an instrument that is played by disrupting an electric field with your bodies natural capacitance. The disruption produced odd and ethereal tones.

Wooden Binary Adding Machine
Posted on 06.22.07 by John @ 10:41 pm

Quite amazing. I hope he builds some more computer parts out of wood.

… a few months ago, I had an idea as to how the divide by two mechanisms from my first marble machine could be cascaded together to actually function as a sort of adder or counter. Once I had that idea, I knew I had to try it at some point, and recently, I finally got around to building my marble binary adding machine.

Space Shuttle To Land Today?
Posted on 06.22.07 by John @ 11:03 am

The space shuttle Atlantis may have to stay on orbit a while longer until the weather decides to clear up.

Uncooperative weather at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., forced flight controllers to pass on STS-117’s first landing attempt today. The crew and the Mission Control team have turned their attention to the next orbit, which has opportunities available in Florida and at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

Musical Tesla Coil
Posted on 06.22.07 by John @ 6:10 am

Astounding!

This is a solid-state Tesla coil. The primary runs at its resonant frequency in the 41 KHz range, and is modulated from the control unit in order to generate the tones you hear.
So just to explain a little further, yes, it is the actual high voltage sparks that are making the noise. Every cycle of the music is a burst of sparks at 41 KHz, triggered by digital circuitry at the end of a "long" piece of fiber optics.

I personally think that this should be standard fare in a marching band. Just think of it for a second, it’s perfect. Loud enough to be heard over the roar of the crowd, easy to play (keyboard interface?), and it includes it’s own light show! Sure, it might take twenty people to haul the batteries around behind it but that is a small price to pay for something as spectacular as this.
And just think of it in a battle of the bands. Put one of these on the point of your formation and the competition will drop like flies. You might need to insulate the musicians that have to march near it but that would sort itself out I would think.

Problem Light (Steampunk edition)
Posted on 06.22.07 by John @ 5:25 am

Very nice execution of this project.

Think of a smoke alarm…but more general.
So, as I began plotting my own problem light, in the Venture Bros style, my friend told me she was redoing her living room steampunk-style.
I began to wonder, how do you do a late 1800s LED…and I ran to scribble a drawing.

The photoset of the build is quite detailed and lends itself to being easily reproducible, it would be a fun project for a long weekend.

DIY Camcorder
Posted on 06.21.07 by John @ 9:35 pm

DIY camcorderThis is one of those projects that makes me want to call in sick and dive into my boxes of junk and build something!

I have always wanted a camcorder for myself and not just any camcorder. I wanted one a bit like a professional broadcast camcorder, where I would be able to mount ad-ons like pre-amps, lights and all the other ever so cool stuff you’ll see professionals packing. However I’m not about to pay the horiffic price of a Red Camera . So let’s just build one…
