Multi Format DIY camera

A very creative and fun way to take photos the old fashioned way, very old fashioned.

Be warned, this guide is not for the faint of heart! BUT! it will be one of the most rewarding projects you’ll ever make, granting you with a camera you built yourself that takes real pictures onto real photo paper.

BUILD GUIDE: A MODERN OLD CAMERA THAT EATS PHOTO PAPER

Lately I’ve been flying a lot of small remote control airplanes and i came across this little gem. Its an ultra micro trainer that has short takeoff and landing abilities. Whay that means is that is can be made to have a whole bunch of lift and go real slow. Great for just loping around a park making touch and goes off the picnic tables. Anyway, Im hoping to get one soon for a review, when I do ill post it here.

Outernet, Because Information Wants to be Free

“Outernets filecast is a groundbreaking innovation in broadcasting, marrying radio broadcasting with file delivery, transcending the format and time limitations of traditional radio or TV broadcasting. Our filecast differentiates itself from a traditional broadcast by sending information as data files, so content is no longer limited to video and audio. Now, any content format can be sent over a radio signal. Receivers automatically cache these files locally, so users can enjoy flexible, on-demand access to content. With the global reach of satellite broadcasting, this system is paving a new way to distribute, access, and consume content.”

So you just have to get a couple of parts totaling about $100USD and you can have an off the grid news, weather, and library that just quietly update itself 24/7. A very cool idea, perfect for rural areas or even out at sea (wind and weather maps).

Drone racing simulator

“Drone Racing is a new high speed competitive racing sport. Skilled pilots fly quad-copter drones through three-dimensional courses at speeds up to 120mph. DRL drones are custom built for speed, agility, and performance. Pilots steer from the point of view of the drone by wearing First Person View (FPV) goggles that display a live image transmitted by an onboard camera. Flying a drone competitively at high speed in FPV is an intense, immersive experience.”

Sound like fun? Think you have the reflexes to compete against 20 somethings? I sure don’t! But don’t despair, you can play the DRL drone sim for free!

The Lux: An Open Source Medium Format Camera

Quite the handsome DIY camera is it it? I’m not only impressed with his design and execution of the camera but also of his reasoning behind doing it:

My goal is to design and produce a fully-fledged camera, using easily purchased off-the-shelf components, without having to rely on anything pulled from a potentially valuable piece of equipment. A secondary goal is also to make this camera completely open source through rapid-prototyping techniques such as laser cutting and 3D printing, and the Arduino physical computing platform.
