Laptop Stickers on Flickr

Stickered Laptop My Toshiba Beast

Over on Boing Boing I saw a group on Flicker I just had to join. It’s a group for people that like to put stickers on their laptops. Here I thought I was the only one that ever did that. Anyway, I joined up and posted two photos of my stickered laptops. I traded the Gateway away for an old Mac Powerbook that made it’s way to a happier home via Ebay years ago but the Toshiba I still use. It’s getting pretty old and tired these days, a 1.2 GHz Celeron just can’t cope with XP. I’m hoping to get rid of it soon so I’m not going to add any more stickers to it. Yeah, I value the stickers more than the laptop I guess. Anyway, go have a look at the Flickr group and see all the gummed goodness.

Visions of Nixie Tubes dancing Around My head

Nixie tubes

I was doing research for an LED project and I ran across this site that sells all sorts of LEDs, fluorescent lamps, and very cool nixie tubes. Just thought I’d mention this because nixie tubes look real cool. So if you need some for a project you know where to go now.

Improvised iPod Holder

A few months ago a co-worker received an iPod as a gift. I observed that he was propping up his new status symbol, er, I mean his MP3 player on some papers. It kept sliding off and he couldn’t read the screen. Generally he didn’t like it. He was talking about buying a over the counter holder and was lamenting the fact that all of them were a bit expensive. I said give me a second and I’ll build him one. So I pulled out a few binder clips and some Post-it notes and built this

I just pinched two large clips together to for a back rest and used a small clip at a foot so the iPod won’t slide off.
The Post-it notes are on there to keep the finish on the Ipod looking good, I hear they scratch pretty easy.

So with just stuff around the office I saved my friend a few bucks and let him view his iPod in true hacker style.

Catapult and Trebuchet Kits On The ‘Net

Trebuchet and Catapult Kits

I saw today that ThinkGeek is selling a few seige machine kits. Pretty cool if you ask me. How often have you wanted to practice your indirect fire skills in the cube farm?
However, once you get tired of these little kiddy kits, go shopping over at CatapultKits.com for some real fun. I’d suggest getting the Mini Desktop Mangonel. The sucker looks dead cool!:

Hardwood, real leather, low price and a range of 20+ feet are just a few of the features of this high quality kit. I personaly want the Floating Arm Trebuchet kit, but I know I’d get in trouble with it.

HDRI – a photoset on Flickr

I was browsing my favorite links  when I discovered an enchanting selection of HDRI (high dynamic range imaging) images of Japan. I’m working on a few of my own using a PC tool called Photomatrix. So far it’s been easier to use than the tool in Photoshop CS2. It provides better control over your image when your stacking the images up. The tone mapping of RAW images looks unbelievably impressive, I figure that I’ll have to go back and re shoot a bunch of my photos with this method. Sounds like a good excuse to go back to Toronto, New York, Japan and Bangkok. 🙂

Rube Goldberg, Japenese Style – ??????

??????

If you can do a task in a more complicated and convoluted fashion than a normal person would then you should be acquainted with these devices. The Japanese call them pitagora souchi, but we call them Rube Goldberg machines.
My brother sent this link to me yesterday. These examples are quite fascinating, the use of household items like spoons and paper clips is very inspirational.
