The Japanese Bath

The ofuro or bathtub is an important part of Japanese culture. It’s not just about getting clean (you do that before you enter that bath) its about relaxing and contemplating the events of the day. I hope to someday have one in my home. Over at Amazon you can pick up a book on them, “The Japanese Bath” is a book by Bruce Smith and Yoshiko Yamamoto and is packed with history, color photos of the baths and even why the selection of the wood used to build them is so important. Priced at $14.95, it is an easy buy. Once you see the baths you will know why these are part of their society.

Marines in Spaaaaaace!

Sounds cool, Marines thundering out of the sky in their drop ships on any point on the planet in two hours, ready to fight for cross and country. However, if you think about it for a while you will realize that this sort of thing is like highly refined political pork. The high test stuff that senators dream about. Anyway, unless there are major advancements in areospace in the next few years this will not make it off the drawing board.

Self Correcting Robots

Maybe this sort of thing can be adapted into technology that will let cars drive themselves.

The robots come in two colors, yellow (Y) and green (G), and float around on a cushion of air. Each robot is programmed to latch onto a green robot on one side and a yellow robot on the other to form 5-robot strings such as YGGYY or GYYGG.

High Power Rocketry in the Black Rock Desert

Whoosh!

Few things beat seeing a rocket scream up into the heavens. Seeing them day and night is an even better thing! There was a recent event in Black Rock Desert (same area here Burning Man is held) where dozens of high powered rockets were flown during over the course of two days. I have to go visit one of these launchings some day, it must be simpley awesome to see one of these monters take flight in person.
