DIY Photobooth Project

Photo booth

Now this could be some serious fun at a large party. Who will be the first to add an input screen and make your very own sicker photo booth (purikura)? These would be simple enough to make as a portable unit, maybe mount it on the back of a bike so you would have a mobile booth. Cool street party fun!

This is a tutorial on how to build your own photobooth much like the traditional ones seen at malls, amusement parks, and shopping centers the world over. This booth however is completely digital and is much much cheaper/easier to do at home…

Creationist Kent “Dr. Dino”Hovind Goes to Jail

DinoI saw this and I just could not find any words that would do this justice [via Boingboing]:

Kent "Dr. Dino" Hovind, founder of Creation Science Evangelism and the Dinosaur Adventure Land creationist theme park in Florida ("where Dinosaurs and the Bible meet!"), and his wife face more than 200 years in jail for tax fraud. (Previous post with background here.) Yesterday, Dr. Dino was found guilty on 58 counts, including not paying an $845,000 employee-related tax bill. From the Pensacola News Journal:

U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers released Jo Hovind until sentencing but denied Kent Hovind’s request to be released. He most likely will be detained at either Escambia County Jail or Santa Rosa County Jail until sentencing.

(Assistant US Attorney Michelle) Heldmyer said Kent Hovind was a flight risk and a "danger to the community."

His attorney, Alan Richey, argued that the Internal Revenue Service pursued his client because of his religious beliefs.

Kent Hovind, whose life’s mission is to debunk evolution, says he and his employees are workers of God and therefore exempt from paying taxes. He pays his employees in cash and does not withhold their taxes or pay his share as an employer.

Photoplane – Pinhole Camera of the Sky

Pinhole camera R/C rig

Pinhole camera of the skyCruising over city buildings, a small remote controlled plane attempts to hold steady, very steady. With a flick of a switch the ground controller send a signal that commands the plane to activate a small servo. One one thousand, two one thousand. The switch is reversed and the servo returns to its former position. The plane starts it’s decent to the field. What just happened? Would you believe that the plot of the remotely operated aircraft just took a photo of the buildings using a pinhole camera? By using fast film (ISO 1600) Daniel is able to take surprisingly sharp photos. Go have a look at his blog and take a look you might be inspired to build your own.

New Water Crystal Discovered

Water

Humm, just when you think that water is water you find out something new. At least they didn’t discover a real life form of Ice Nine.

Mao’s team subjected water to a pressure 170,000 times greater than atmospheric pressure at sea level. Then they bombarded it with X-rays, causing the water molecules to split and reform into a previously unknown crystalline solid made of H2 molecules and 02 molecules.

TWiT is Dead, Long Live Net@Night

net@night Sweet! I was a bit annoyed when I found out that my favorite podcast, er, netcast, ‘This Week in Tech’ (TWiT) had been put on hold because no one was available. Thats burn out, pretty sure of that. Anyway, Leo Laporte is back! He and Amber MacArthur will be doing a tech review show so we can still get our dose of Leo. I’ll miss the grumpy Dvorak but maybe he will be back as a guest. The cool think about all this is the show will be netcast’ed live so people can call in. I love that! That to me is the one big dynamic thing that podcasting, er, netcasting (I’ll get that right someday) has been missing. Radio call in shows have been doing it for decades but that works because of the serious money used to get phone lines, equipment, and hardware. If this software they they are using (Talkshoe) works then this could be the start of a true revolution in Internet entertainment. Think if Sirius used this during their regular Internet radio broadcasts?

Amber and I are proud to announce the first live TWiTcast. We’re reinventing Inside the Net, and renaming it net@nite. You’ll still be able to listen to the show as a podcast every Tuesday, but you can also listen live as we record it Sunday nights. Even better, you can participate.

The Landmaster

LandmasterAny science fiction fan worth their salt knows what your talking about when you mention the word "Landmaster". Arguable one of the most recognized vehicle ever created for a movie (Damnation Alley), this monster of a futuristic super survival truck was built to last and actually be practical. Meaning that it’s not just for show but it actually works. The Landmasters most noticeable feature is its odd tri-star wheel arrangement. Twelve wheels, all powered but only eight are in contact with the road, are set into four triangular mounts that will rotate over large obstacles. This gives the Landmaster the ability to go through deep mud, over big rocks, and pretty deep water. Turning this beast is done with an articulated joint in the middle of the vehicle. Did I mention that it floats? Yeah, it floats. It’s amazing that such detail was given to a prop in a move. It’s a tribute to the skill of Dean Jefferies, car master and artist. He built loads of cars that appeared in films in the 60’s and 70’s like the Monkees, Logan’s Run, Green Hornet, The Great Race, and even Diamonds are Forever. In fact, if your in the Hollywood area you might see the mighty Landmaster parked next to Jefferie’s auto shop on Cahuenga boulevard. This page has loads of info and photos on the beast. I hope to see it in another film soon, it’s got a few more miles left on it for sure.
