Here is an interview with Matt Campbell, why should you read it? Well he took a model rocket and adapted it’s nose cone to house a hacked CVS video camera. The videos of the launch are pretty impressive. The recovery phase of the launch wa a little rough, if there was a way to stabalize the nose cone during decent the video was be heaps better. It’s also of some not that the camera will do odd things to the image is it’s slewed too fast. Go take a look at the video to see that I mean.
The CVS Video camera is going to be showing up in so many projects that it’s bound to win some sort of DIY hackability award (hint hint MAKE, you should have one of these).
I know if I had a few (and yes, I’d want at least three of them) I’d put a zoom lens on one, and turn the other two into a stereoptic video system with variable ocular distance. That would be so flipping cool… Then there would be the ‘lets-make-you-sick’ three inches off the road camera for my car, an underwater housing for those times at the beach, and not to mention a pretty cool payload for an R/C car.

Pinhole World

When your thinking of pinhole photographs you probably see in your mind an oatmeal box with some fill in it at the hands of a ten year old child during his first photo class and thats about it, the idea of a camera without a digital display, a compact flash card, or even a real lens sounds so absurd these days that no one in their right mind would ever dream, of using one. If you thought any of that your way off base. Pinhole photography is alive and well these days with lots of people producing some nice pieces of work. I personally enjoy it so much that I’ve built my own camera. (I’ve put a bunch of photos from it up on my Flickr account if you want to see them)
Go take a look at pinhole world and see what is going on in the world of basic photography.
Maybe if I get good enough at shooting the pinhole way my work will end up here…

Pearl Harbor Show
More photos by Me here.
I posted a bunch of photos from an airshow I was at a few months ago to my Flickr account. Go take a look at the set and see all the cool planes that were there, and a few other things.
Hands free photography

Now this looks cool. Voice activated (“take shot”) and easy to wear this could be very handy for all sorts or … things.
It uses an iSight and an Apple Powerbook housed in a backpack to do all the work. Funny, I don’t see anyone doing the same thing with a Dell or an IBM laptop…
Pretty Camera… Want Pretty Camera…

I need one for recording my fish swimming in his aquarium… Ok, that might be a little overkill but my fish would look simply stunning.
Ok, back to reality. This is the kind of camera that you buy to make money with, not shoot home viddies of the kids romping around the pool. With this camera you should be out shooting indy films, or TV ads, or at least porn.
… HDV video camera and HDV recorder that supports 720p, has a 1.1MP 1/3″ 3CCD sensor and offers recording in PAL and NTSC. It supports MiniDV and DV and you can even connect an external HDD to record either 3h of video on 40Gb or 6h on 80Gb. If you want to make copies of your art afterworks, have a look at the HD50, that is 480/60p to 1080/60i compatible. It also comes with a FireWire connection. The camera will cost 6500 EUR and the recorder 3900 EUR, and they will be available from September onwards.
Helium Movies

What do you get when you cross a digital camera, some rubber, and a few cubic feet of helium? No, not a presidential press corps junket, you get ‘Helium Movies’!
This guy attached his digital camera to a few large balloons, put it into movie mode and hit the timer. When it went off he let go. The result is a rather nauseating down shot of the launch site. Pretty cool if you think about it. One of the (now) hacker friendly CVS video cameras would be perfect for this sort of thing. What a cool way to grab a unique shot of a family picnic or a camping trip. Just remember to use a nice light weight strong tether or your never going to see your results!
