The United States military is funding railgun experiments. At the University of Texas’ Center for Electromechanics, military railguns capable of delivering tungsten armor piercing bullets with kinetic energies of nine million joules have been developed (http://www.iat.utexas.edu/electrodyn.html). Nine million joules is enough energy to deliver 1 kg of projectile at 3 km/s – which will tear a tank to pieces in a single shot.

Can I get this in blocks? I’d love to mill something out of this material. Sounds like the wood is being rendered to break down its cellulose and then its poured into whatever basic shape is needed. Still sounds neat.
The technology features a new material called “wooden ‘plastic.’” Although composites of wood and plastic have already been developed, EXPO 2005 Aichi, Japan will introduce clock gears created with wooden “plastic,” made of 100 percent wood. To make these gears, wood waste and chips are used. These materials are heated at 200°C in a high-temperature steam boiler, to break down the wood fibers. The resulting material is dried and powdered. The powder is then re-heated and pressed into disc-shape. Characteristically, when heated these powders liquefy like paste, and when cooled, they solidify like plastic. Finally, teeth are cut into the edges of the discs, to create gears. There is little difference in strength between gears made of wooden “plastic” and those made of conventional plastic.

Oops! I forgot one. I have a few old cell phones that this might work on. I also see gobs of them in second hand stores for less than $5 each all the time. One of these might make a good display on a robot if you can drive it.

The theremin is a very cool device that is enjoying some what of a comeback these days. I’ll have to build one and place the speaker and antennas outside my front door. When someone goes to knock they will make weird music. Might scare them off too!

I did the same thing for a bit less I think. B&W film is fun to develope at home, nowdays you just scan them and you don’t have to mess with an enlarger. I just wish I had a scanner with less scratched glass and some anti Newton ring surface to it so I could get sharper images.
