Bank of America Tower VS. Tall Out of Shape Guy

Derek Chatwood
So I get an email from my crazy high school friend Derek tonight. He has this notion that running up 79 flights of stairs is a good idea as long as its to raise money to fight against cancer. I totally agree with that! I myself have lost family member to cancer and would like to see more research done to cure/prevent it. Go visit and make a donation, then tell your friends to do the same, I dare ya!

Nanotechnology and Jewelry

I saw this at lunch today on Roland Piquepaille’s Technology News and Trends:

One of the features of gold and silver nanoparticles is that they possess a range of quite unusual colors. Bulk gold has a familiar yellow color, which is caused by a reduction in the reflectivity of light at the blue end of the spectrum. However, if we subdivide the gold into smaller and smaller particles, there comes a point at which the particle size becomes smaller than the wavelength of incident light. New modes of interaction between the radiation and the gold become prominent, in particular interactions involving electronic oscillations called surface plasmons. When the particles of gold are small enough, they are ruby red in color. This coloration is due to the gold particles strong absorption of green light, corresponding to the frequency at which a resonance occurs with the gold.

Nano Everything!

Science
You know, you blink and you miss out on everything. I was wondering what was going on in the apparently fast paced world of nanotechnology and came across this. I had not idea that there were so many current nanotechnology applications in the the world today.
I wonder if nano tech could be employed to form a finer photo sensitive emulsion on photographic films and paper. I can only imagine what a photo would look like if the light sensitive material was as small as the wavelength of light it was supposed to detect. Even more improvement could be made if the emulsion layers were deposited in a very ordered fashion, not the random looking clumps you get now.

These guys rock, they have been fighting the narrow minded masses for years in order to let comics ( and other forms of sequential art) be the artistic medium that it is. Go visit and send your support to them. ( Remember, these are the good laywers, the ones that can take a joke)

The CBLDF exists to fight censorship and defend the first amendment rights of comic book professionals throughout the United States, but we can’t do it without your help.

Surgery daVinci Style

It’s one thing to have a robot make you coffee (Mr. Coffee) or wash your clothes (Maytag) or even pilot an airplane (the classic autopilot), but to have one cut open a human and make some repairs. I guess this isn’t that much like ‘Saturn 3‘, a human is still running the show albeit remotely. The autodoc may become part of the standard military field hospital in the next few years, that would be a very good thing as the modern warfare techniques are allowing for a higher survivability rate and in previous combat situations.

The da Vinci Surgical System, is a robotic device which allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery with the intuitive control, range of motion, fine tissue manipulation capability and 3-D visualization characteristic of open surgery.

The da Vinci seamlessly and directly translates the surgeon’s natural hand, wrist and finger movements on instrument controls at the surgeon’s console outside the patient’s body into corresponding micro-movements of the instrument tips positioned inside the patient through small incisions.
