I saw this today and it made me want to cry. For years I have been lamenting the demise of hands on science in schools. 30 years ago a class in science would have demos for all sorts of things that would now not only get you arrested but tried as a terrorist. I wonder how many chemists, scientists, and countless other physical science professionals were inspired to learn their craft after seeing what happens when you combine charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate together. I wonder what tame experiment teaches the concept of an exothermic reaction these days. I’m thinking it must involve hand puppets and play-doh. Those are safe, the children won’t get hurt or get any ‘funny ideas’ from that can they?
