The Z Machine Gun Shoots Faster Than the Earth

Z Machine

Anything is a good excuse for a story about the Z Machine.

Sandia National Labs has accelerated a small plate from zero to 76,000 mph in less than a second.
The speed of the thrust was a new record for Sandia’s Z Machine — sometimes referred to as the fastest gun in the West. Actually the fastest in the world, it is now able to propel small plates at 34 kilometers a second, faster than the 30 km/sec that Earth travels through space in its orbit about the sun, 50 times faster than a rifle bullet, and three times the velocity needed to escape Earth’s gravitational field.

The immediate purpose of these very rapid flights is to help understand the extreme conditions found within the interiors of the giant planets Saturn and Jupiter, hasten the achievement of virtually unlimited energy through peacetime atomic fusion, and provide more information about the condition of the U.S. nuclear stockpile without having to explode a nuclear weapon.

Bladeless Turbine

Tesla Turbine

Oh so cool and nifty! The idea is real simple, just a (or many) flat disk(s) with a gas or a liquid shooting across at a tangent.

A Tesla turbine is a quite unique technology. It was invented and patented by Nikola Tesla on the 21st October 1909 at the Untied States Patent Office from experiments done in England. The patent 1061206 was granted on the 6th May 1913. Although, it is thought that a Tesla first showed a 200 hp 16,000 RPM version on the 10th of July 1906 (on Tesla’s 50th birthday).

CityKitty

cat seat

Ok, I like cats but this is a but much. BTW, if you get one of these, never bat the cats tail when it’s checking out the throne. I guess they use their tails for balance. Oh yeah, cats don’t like water.

The training seat replaces your ordinary litter box and securely sits on your toilet filled with litter. Your cat naturally uses the CitiKitty training seat as its new litter box. Once your cat has adapted to the training seat you slowly begin removing the rings from the training seat reducing the amount of litter. As the rings are removed your cat will stand on the toilet seat for support and use the water below. After all rings are removed from the training seat your cat is toilet trained.

SEE BANFF!

Kinetoscope

What a clever idea. The viewing machine is a classic looking kinetoscope, the kind you find at Disney land, and the images are of current day Banff Canada rendered in beautiful stereo.

These views were filmed around Banff and rural Alberta in autumn 1993. They were recorded with two stop-frame 16mm film cameras mounted on a “super jogger” baby carriage. Stereoscopic recording was either triggered by an intervalometer (for timelapse) or by an encoder on one of the carriage wheels (for dollys and moviemaps). Since the filming was “stop-frame” (rather than “real-time”), time and space appear compressed.

Railgun

Lorentz lines

I saw this today on Wikipedia:

The United States military is funding railgun experiments. At the University of Texas’ Center for Electromechanics, military railguns capable of delivering tungsten armor piercing bullets with kinetic energies of nine million joules have been developed (http://www.iat.utexas.edu/electrodyn.html). Nine million joules is enough energy to deliver 1 kg of projectile at 3 km/s – which will tear a tank to pieces in a single shot.
