DIY Valentines

Heart EggsOver on Cool Hunting there’s a lovely list of do it yourself Valentines Day projects.

Often considered a marketing invention to help boost sales in an otherwise slow economic period for retailers, Valentine’s Day needn’t be another excuse to express love through our capalitistic, consumeristic ways. There are plenty of options to give without hitting the mall, so this year CH decided to put together a list of homemade Valentines gifts (and kits).

I’m partial to the naughty ice cream sandwich myself but the sun jar would be cool to give as a gift.

Realtime Mandelbrot Fractal Generation

Now you can explore the wonders of fractals with this online generator. I’m with Revo of Ektopia on this one, I used to sit in front of my Commodore 64 and wait for hours as a short fractal zoom loop slowly rendered on the screen. After I moved to the PC platform I did the same thing with Fractint. Now there was a program!

A New Super 8 Film Camera

Ikonoskopds8Long live the Super 8 film format! There looks to be a new movie camera coming out soon (with a little help from the faithful):

The A-Cam DS8 will offer the same features as its Super 16mm brother, including interchangeable C-Mount lenses (the camera ships with a wide-angle f/1.5 9mm Kinoptic lens), parallel viewfinder, 100 ft film capacity, and microprocessor-synchronized frame rates between 6 and 37.5 frames per second. The camera weighs a mere 1.5 kg complete with lens, batteries and film.

Double Super 8 (DS8) is a hybrid format that uses 16mm wide film to capture Super 8 sized frames. One half of the film is exposed, the reels are flipped, and the other half is shot. The 16mm strip is cut into two 8mm-wide reels after processing.

If you want to order one (they need at least 25 pre-orders, but you get a discount) check the info at the bottom of the page after the leap:

Evil Dead, The Musical

Evil Dead the MusicalI’m not normally a fan of musicals. In fact I tend to avoid them at all costs. However, I will make an exception for one that is based on the Sam Raimi film ‘The Evil Dead‘. Now the show closes on Feb 17 so you have to act fast if you want to see it. It’s in New York so it might be a bit of a walk for some of you, others it’s just a plane flight away.

Spaceship Serenity Paper Model

I found this beautiful paper model of the spaceship from the science fiction TV series ‘Firefly‘. I just started watching the DVDs yesterday so I naturally was looking around the ‘Net for more info on the show. It’s pretty good, pity that it was axed so quickly by Fox, but I guess everyone says that.
The ship looks like a pretty complex build, it has more detail that you would expect, it even has the ambassadors  shuttle craft.
